It is totally different to use a stand-up lift truck compared to a sit-down model. The way you transport and pick up cargo along with your movements are totally different. If you do not have correct training for operating a stand-up unit, you could possibly cause harm to yourself or to co-employees. When operating a stand-up model, you must follow the correct safety rules. There are several basic operating standards which need to be met when operating a stand-up model.
When starting, stand up on the forklift so as to get a feel for the controls and the steering knob. The steering is handled using the knob steering plate instead of a steering wheel. Take note that this knob moves really fast, hence, you must get used to moving it carefully so as to be sure not to over steer. The horn is located on the control handle, as is the control for the fork movement and for backwards, forwards. The floor pedal allows the equipment to move.
Turn the key to start the forklift's engine if you are set to begin. The forks should not be extended at this stage. When you are moving around the floor, the forks must be pointed a little upwards. Never drive with the forks in their extended position. If you are traveling forwards, move the control handle forward and step on the pedal in order to make the lift move forward. If you are backing up, be sure to beep your horn to warn those around you. Look behind you prior to stepping on the pedal in order to make sure the way is clear and safe. After that, while stepping on the pedal, pull the control handle towards you. Always stay focused and alert and make sure that you are operating in a safe manner at all times.
When approaching a corner with the lift truck, turn the steering knob towards the direction you are heading. Make sure to keep your foot on the accelerator and keep your hands on the control handle. When turning right, the steering knob would move in a clockwise direction during forward travel. If you are turning left, your steering knob would go in a counter-clockwise direction.
If you have just used sit down units, the stand-up versions may take some getting used to. If you take some time to figure out the machinery and with some training, you will be able to efficiently and quickly handle loads in little time.
