Getting Aboard the Forklift
The 3-point dismount is amongst the keys to keeping operators safe. It is the main issue for maintaining operator safety, even though this is normally overlooked. For instance, a few years ago, at a forklift rally, a contestant carried out the course perfectly at a forklift rally. At the end of his run, he was so excited, that he jumped off of his machinery and totally forgot to make a 3-point dismount. He failed to win the competition because he judges ended up docking marks from his overall score.
The importance of dismounting and mounting forklifts is a really serious factor to be covered in training. In addition, having operators wear their seatbelts could really save their lives in case of a tip-over. It is truly necessary to know that if a loaded forklift's center of gravity moves outside of the stability triangle then a tip-over situation can occur. Trained drivers seldom ever run into a tip-over situation, however, it is very important that they are ready for that risk in case it happens.
Dismount/Mount
Dismounting and mounting of forklifts is important for ensuring the operator stays safe. This is also essential even on low platform pallet jacks. There are way too many injuries sustained from using these equipment. Some of the serious situations include: Driver's catching their loose clothing or coveralls while dismounting and could end up falling and wrenching their back. At times, the driver could sprain or break an ankle when they step off of a lift truck. The operator could accidentally break an arm when slipping and falling off of the pallet jack. The operator could suffer from torn shoulder muscles if they slip on floor debris while they are still hanging onto the handhold using one hand.
Having 3 points of contact is necessary when dismounting or mounting a forklift so as to keep you safe. The 3 points could be obtained by 2 hands and 1 foot or by 2 feet and 1 hand. This stance is exactly like climbing up or down a ladder. Remember to face the machine at all times. Drivers usually have a tendency to face away from the machine or to jump or hop off the equipment and these mistakes greatly reduce the overall possibility of hurting themselves.
