Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to operate electric lift trucks is supplied by big industrial batteries that need to be charged regularly and maintained properly. Safety procedures should always be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is important to check fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is essential for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Full protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station must be located near the charging place. The path to the station must not be blocked and an employee who is injured should be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging area in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited in the vicinity of a charging area and battery. Never allow items like for instance lighters or matches to be utilized when somebody is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also needs to be correctly ventilated. The recharging method can release fumes. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
