Driving a forklift is a lot more complex than driving a vehicle. A lift truck operator should be highly skilled and trained in using a forklift. Operating a forklift needs a high level of attentiveness. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or also referred to as OSHA reports that 85 individuals die in forklift-related accidents each and every year year. Around 35,000 individuals are injured every year in forklift accidents. Almost 50% of operator deaths result from a forklift tip over.

To avoid tip overs, it is important that drivers know how to correctly estimate the weight of a load. In the construction industry, the load weight is often posted right on the load. If a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, and the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks, the whole weight of the load will be roughly 1,360 kilograms. If a load is wet, the driver will have to take additional weight into account.

It is dangerous for drivers to make poorly informed guesses about the real load weight and whether the forklift can handle it. If an operator cannot be sure about the load weight, he should ask for help from the supervisor.

One more cause of tip overs is failure to pull up near enough to a building to lift or place a load using an extended boom. It is important to utilize the load chart to avoid tipping the lift truck. Even if a forklift does not really tip over, a mishap has occurred when the back wheels come off the ground. This means the limitations of the forklift have been exceeded. Even though damage might not be obvious, the rear axle could have sustained broken when hitting the ground.

Forklifts could even tip when not carrying a load. An unloaded forklift could tip if a driver has positioned a load on scaffolding using an extended boom. If the driver reverses the lift truck and suddenly turns whilst bringing the boom down, the center of gravity would be pushed to the edges of the forklift and can lead to a tip over. An operator must always use the joysticks to lower and retract the fork.
